Frequently Asked Questions

An RIA is a firm registered with the SEC or state securities administrators that advises clients on investments and manages their portfolios. Critically, RIAs are bound by a fiduciary duty to act in their clients' best interests, unlike traditional broker-dealers who operate under a "suitability" standard.

Initial setup costs typically range from $10,000 to $30,000, depending on legal fees, compliance consulting, state registration fees, and initial technology investments. Ongoing compliance and tech costs for a solo practitioner generally start around $15,000 - $25,000 annually.

Generally, RIAs with less than $100 million in Regulatory Assets Under Management (RAUM) must register with the state(s) where they conduct business. Firms exceeding $100M RAUM must register federally with the SEC, though there are specific exemptions for mid-sized advisors in certain states.
